CCP Leader Opens New Front Against Punjab Government and Threatens Hunger Strike; here’s why

In what is seen as a new round of confrontations between Punjab chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi and CPC leader Navjot Singh Sidhu, the latter said on Thursday he would start a hunger strike against the government of the Congress if the state does not release the report on the drug threat and the sacrilege incident.

The move comes just two days after two deliberations with congressional leaders in Delhi to strategize for the upcoming state assembly polls. Channi and Sidhu had both arrived in the nation’s capital on Monday afternoon with the AICC head of Punjab affairs, Harish Chaudhary, and later met at the party’s “war room” office.

This is not the first time that Sidhu has launched a direct attack on the new chief minister. The former cricketer has been at daggers drawn with the Channi government over the appointment of APS Deol as general counsel and the two have clashed publicly over the legal battle in the sacrilege cases of 2015.

Channi had, in early November, refused the resignation offered by Advocate General APS Deol. Sources then told News18 that Deol was upset by statements from senior congressional leaders, including Sidhu, regarding his retention, as the attorney general had indeed tendered his resignation, which was rejected by the chief minister. Although the government and the chief minister have been quiet about the resignation controversy, sources said Channi is upset that the CCP leader continues to publicly attack him.

Later, Sidhu’s minister of state and assistant Pargat Singh was asked to call the sulky leader and bring him to a meeting with the CM and state official Harish Choudhary. During the meeting, Sidhu made it clear that he would not budge until the attorney general was removed from his post. And at a press conference, Sidhu pointed out that while he was withdrawing his resignation, he would only enter the Pradesh Congressional Committee (CPC) office when the GA’s resignation was accepted by the chief minister.

Sources said the CM made another attempt to convince senior officials as well as Sidhu that an amicable common ground could be reached.

Sidhu, however, refused to accept it. He knew full well that this was high moral ground. So he tactically decided to go to the Dera Baba Nanak checkpoint and urge the opening of the Kartarpur corridor with Pakistan. A few hours later, a similar request was made by Channi.

A day before that, Sidhu had, in what was considered an indirect search in Channi, skinned “politicians” who had announced giveaways before the election. Channi recently announced several sops straining the Treasury.

The same week, he also attacked the Channi government for delays in filing a plea against former DGP Sumedh Singh Saini’s blanket bond in the Behbal Kalan dismissal case. Sidhu said the Channi government lacked the political will to deal with such cases, accusing the government waiver of delaying the filing of a special authorization request against the blanket bond given to former DGP Saini, one of the key persons named in the Behbal Kalan Police dismissal cases. .

He added that a day passed beyond the six-month period for the new SIT to complete the investigation into the Kotkapura police dismissal case and that no concrete steps were taken to bring justice. has been taken. He again targeted the DGP and the GA, saying the party can choose either the compromised officers or himself.

“I have stood by principle and high morality, and I am not one of those who changed my position after dethroning Captain Amarinder Singh,” Sidhu said in a veiled attack on Channi, adding that the people of the state awaited justice in the sacrilege affair. and the state government was seen to lack the “will” to do justice.

The two leaders are expected to be patient again once the dates for next year’s Assembly elections are announced. The next big challenge for the Congress party will be distributing tickets to the Punjab, as Channi as well as Sidhu would like to ensure that most of their supporters are chosen as candidates. Because the one with the support of the maximum number of MPs will most likely wear the Punjab crown.
