Chris Cuomo requests new timeslot from NewsNation as ratings tank

Chris Cuomo is demanding that his NewsNation bosses move his new show to a different timeslot — his latest desperate attempt to improve his dwindling viewership on the up-and-coming cable TV network, The Post has learned.

Cuomo – who joined NewsNation on Oct. 3 after being fired from CNN for secretly helping his older brother, the ex-governor. Andrew Cuomo, who navigates a slew of sex scandals, is furious with the lackluster performance of his late-night show, which currently airs at 8 p.m., Monday through Friday, sources said.

In response, Cuomo recently sat down with Michael Corn — the former ABC producer who became NewsNation’s news president last year — about switching timeslots with talk show host Dan Abrams, who has the 9 p.m. slot on weeknights, sources said.

“Cuomo gets mean with the ratings and he starts blaming everyone but himself,” an insider said. “He blames the network, the staff he personally hired, his lead-in, the promo department and even the press department!”

Chris Cuomo interviews Kanye West
Chris Cuomo’s big interview with Kanye West drew a disappointing 129,000 viewers.

“Cuomo” saw 147,000 viewers on its debut. Since then, ratings have declined overall, with the week of October 17 averaging 119,000 nightly viewers. Even Cuomo’s explosive interview with artist Kanye West, now known as Ye, only drew 129,000 viewers.

“Chris was walking around yelling that Newsmax was beating him,” the source said, referring to the conservative network, which trails Fox News, MSNBC and CNN.

As of 8 p.m., NewsMax’s Eric Bolling consistently beats Cuomo with between 150,000 and more than 200,000 viewers per night, according to Nielsen.

“It’s a Cuomo. He doesn’t blame himself. All his life he was told he was special,” the source added. “Nobody talks about his show.”

Cuomo’s biggest complaint is that NewsNation’s 7 p.m. intro show, “On Balance with Leland Vittert,” barely draws 30,000 viewers a night. Usually, the intro show brings a carryover audience.

“Dan Abrams Live” draws between 60,000 and 100,000 viewers on any given night, but insiders were skeptical whether swapping slots with Abrams would make a difference.

Frustrated with his entry, Cuomo attempted to play for Dan Abrams’ 9 p.m. slot. Abrams (left) and Cuomo (right) are NewsNation’s main prime time anchors.

A NewsNation spokeswoman said: “Your information is completely, utterly, 100% inaccurate. But we’re glad The Post took so much interest in NewsNation’s success.

“We’ve spoken to many people in our newsroom and on Chris’s staff and they’re all very pleased with the growth we’re seeing,” the rep added.

Cuomo did not return requests for comment.

NewsNation was launched by parent company Nexstar Media in March 2021 in hopes of creating a balanced 24/7 news network. The hottest rental to date is Cuomo. The former CNN anchor was brought in to boost the ratings of the fledgling network, whose top-rated show includes reruns of crime drama “Blue Bloods.”

“They should air ‘Blue Bloods’ before it does,” the source joked, pointing to the crime drama’s ratings of around 300,000 total viewers.

Even Cuomo’s top-rated show — which drew 214,000 viewers and aired at 9 p.m. after the Dr. Mehmet Oz-John Fetterman debate for the Pennsylvania U.S. Senate seat — drew criticism from media watchers.

“The show sucks,” said a television executive, who spoke on condition of anonymity. “Cuomo spoke for 12 minutes straight. He did an analysis of the Fetterman debate with no clips illustrating his points. It was just him fuming.

NewsNation sources said Cuomo also spoke out off camera. In recent days, the primetime presenter has chastised NewsNation’s press and marketing teams for not publicizing his show enough, even when they launched a PR campaign for the presenter.

This is despite the news team taking unusual steps to promote “Cuomo” that angered insiders, including urging employees of other shows to promote Cuomo’s broadcast in their email signatures.

Cuomo’s outbursts have also prompted some employees who work on his show to prepare for layoffs, according to sources close to the network.

“Chris has zero patience,” an insider said. “It’s not going to end well.”
