Lately there is always news about a sexually assaulted child or adult. It is no longer a question of gender because no gender is spared by the perversion that inhabits human hearts. The question then becomes, is this a recent development or something widespread due to the presence of the internet compared to the past? The answer is no. This is not a recent development, and thanks to the advent of social media, we can talk about these issues with one voice and drive the change we need to see in our society.

Judging by the title of this article, you might be wondering if sexual assault is limited or only pronounced in the United States. This is not synonymous with those that exist only in America, but quite evident in other parts of the world. Nonetheless, for the sake of this article, we’ll focus on the United States. We really cannot thank the internet and social media enough for the power they have given to our voices and the indispensable role they have and still play in uncovering the evil perpetuated daily in our society.

Sexual assault in the United States

In the United States, more than four hundred thousand cases of sexual assault are recorded each year, and the age group is made up of people aged 12 to 34. What is even more disturbing is that every day this demographic seems to tilt to those under the age of 12.

The harsh reality that came with the understanding that this disease can be rooted in anyone is the “aha” moment we all needed to wake up. We all needed this rude awakening to the belief that only some sort of person with certain background, race, or orientation can sexually assault others. The time and the advent of sexual abuse laws showed us that the ordinary person on the street, the politician, the actor or the celebrity, can be a sexual predator. With this awareness, people become more and more aware of the shortcomings of others, even down to the so-called celebrities.

One of the most popular incidents of sexual assault on record. This trend has led to an increase in reports of sexual assault perpetrated by wealthy and powerful men in society. This was sparked by multiple charges of sexual assault by Harvey Weinstein against various young girls and women. This caused a major shift in conversations about sexual assault, as one testimonial allowed more women to step in to share their own experiences and lobby for justifications. By this outcome of voices gave birth to the #MeToo movement. Where other women, especially in the entertainment industry, have come out to talk about the sexual assault they have suffered to varying degrees.

2. Bill Cosby

When famous actor Bill Cosby was first arrested for sexual assault, it came as a huge shock to everyone. It was because of what the public figure “Bill Cosby” represented. He starred in a family soap opera that captured the attention of families around the world. Bottom line, Bill, the family soap opera star, and Bill, the sexual predator, were a total contrast which is mind boggling every time we think about it. In order for someone on a pedestal like Bill Cosby to be convicted of sexual assault, the United States and the entire world have been sexually assaulted for all they are and can be – clandestine, harmful and a violation of their rights.

3. Uber

Uber has become a mainstay of the ridesharing industry, and with its benefits come the pitfalls. Although the company born in the early twenties has carved out a niche for itself thanks to the need it solves for society; This innovative carpooling company has helped show that we have a deeply rooted problem on our hands. In the words of Tony West, Uber General Counsel, “What he’s saying is that Uber is a reflection of the company it serves.” As in the case of drivers who sexual assault runners, especially women, this mainstream society has inadvertently helped put the rate of sexual assault in the United States on the map.

As unfortunate as it may sound, all thanks to these incidents and more, awareness of sexual assault in the United States has become more than an individual nightmare. It has become a very advanced subject that all sexes join hands to fight. Do we still have sexual predators in the United States? Sure, but are we better equipped for combat? Totally!
