Misuse of the police apparatus has weakened its independent functioning, says Somireddy

The violence over the renaming of Konaseema district after Dr. BR Ambedkar in Amalapuram showed that the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) government had lost its grip on the administration, Telugu member Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy has alleged Desam Party Polit Bureau.

“The ruling party has abused the police apparatus to impose prosecutions on the leaders of the opposition parties. This has weakened the independent functioning of the police, who remained silent spectators when a mob unleashed the violence,” Mr. Chandramohan Reddy told media on Wednesday, after overseeing preparations for the two-day Mahanadu TDP beginning Friday.

He alleged that the YSRCP government had compromised with the professional functioning of the police department and had boomeranged as even the YSRCP ministers and MPs lacked security amid the violence in Amalapuram.

Mr. Chandramohan Reddy also witnessed a political plot by YSRCP to divert people’s attention from the killing of young Dalits in Kakinada in which YSRCP MLC Ananta Udhaya Bhaskar was allegedly involved.

Referring to Mahanadu, the TDP leader said the agenda set by the party at the annual conclave would be a precursor to the party’s election manifesto. “We will present our demands to improve the living conditions of ordinary people who are facing serious hardship due to soaring commodity prices,” he said.

Meanwhile, TDP Andhra Pradesh Unit Chairman K. Atchannaidu has accused the YSRCP of putting up obstacles for Mahanadu. “After refusing permission to hold the conclave at the mini stadium of Ongole, the flexis set up by the TDP militants were withdrawn,” he said, adding that the farmers of Manduvavaripalem, upset by the YSRCP government policy, had volunteered to donate their lands for the conclave.

“The advance taken for the rental of state-owned buses has been reimbursed. Private schools and colleges have been warned of dire consequences if they provide vehicles to transport TDP activists to the conclave,” he complained.
