Joe Biden met with his son’s Ukrainian, Russian and Kazakh associates at a dinner in Washington, DC, while he was vice president, files on the Hunter Biden abandoned laptop show.
The dinner, on April 16, 2015, took place in the private “Garden Room” of Café Milano, a Georgetown institution whose slogan is: “Where the most powerful people in the world go.”
The next day, Hunter received an email from Vadym Pozharskyi, an executive at Ukrainian energy company Burisma, thanking him for introducing him to his father.
“Dear Hunter, thank you for inviting me to DC and giving me the opportunity to meet your father and spend [sic] some time together, ”Pozharskyi wrote on April 17, 2015.
“It’s real estate [sic] an honor and a pleasure.
At the time, Burisma was paying Hunter $ 83,333 per month to serve on its board of directors.
The guest list that Hunter made three weeks before dinner at Café Milano included Russian billionaire Yelena Baturina and her husband, the corrupt former Moscow mayor Yury Luzhkov, who has since died. Baturina wired $ 3.5 million on February 14, 2014 to Rosemont Seneca Thornton LLC, a Delaware-based investment firm co-founded by Hunter and Devon Archer, a former adviser to Secretary of State John Kerry.
The sons were pointed out in suspicious activity reports provided by the Treasury to a Republican Senate investigation into Hunter last year by the Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee.
Hunter told guests before dinner that his father would be present. In an email, he appears to be using his role on the World Food Program USA board of directors as a cover for the evening’s true purpose of introducing his father to his associates.
“Ok – the reason for the dinner is apparently to discuss food security,” Hunter wrote on March 26 to Michael Karloutsos, son of the then head of the Greek Orthodox Church.
“Dad will be there but keep this between us for now.” Thank you.”
Karloutsos replies: “It’s all between us. Everything is fine! … I know you said your dad would probably join the dinner too.
The dinner raises the question of how well Joe Biden, who claimed to be unaware of his son’s activities, was aware of Hunter’s dealings with foreign companies and government officials.
Three Kazakh officials were also invited to the Café Milano dinner, including Marc Holtzman, then president of the largest bank in the former Soviet republic, the Kazkommertsbank.
A Mexican ambassador and representatives from the United States’ World Food Program were also on the guest list, which Hunter emailed Archer three weeks before dinner:
“3 seats for our KZ [Kazakhstan] friends.
“2 places for Yelana and her husband
“2 [seats for] you and me.
“3 seats for the people of WFPUSA
“3 Ambassadors (MX,?,?)
It’s unclear if everyone on Hunter’s list was in attendance. Archer emailed Hunter ahead of the event to tell him that Baturina didn’t want to come but that her husband would attend.
“Yelena doesn’t want to steal Yuri’s thunder, so she will be in town to meet us but doesn’t want to come to dinner,” Archer wrote on March 20. “It was just his thoughts. We could insist.
He finished the email: “Obviously save a spot for your guy (and mine if he’s in town.)”
Hunter replied, “I think your guy is here, it’s more trouble than it’s worth – unless you have another idea.
It’s unclear whether Archer’s “guy” was Secretary of State John Kerry or someone else at the time.
Rick Leach, founder of WFP USA, the US fundraising arm of the United Nations-linked nonprofit, emailed Hunter at 11:15 pm after dinner: “What a fantastic and
productive evening – thank you!
Kazakh banker Holtzman sent an email: “Deer [sic] Hunter, Thank you for an amazing evening, wonderful company and a great conversation. I look forward to seeing you soon and many opportunities to work closely together. “
Hunter does not name the other two representatives of Kazakhstan on his guest list, but on the morning of dinner, Archer was invited to a “private breakfast” with Kazakh Prime Minister Karim Massimov in his suite at the Willard Hotel: issues the Prime Minister looks forward to discussing with you and he will appreciate the opportunity to spend quality time together.
The following year, Hunter described Massimov in an email as a “close friend”.
The president’s 51-year-old son had a business relationship in Kazakhstan with an associate of Massimov, the oligarch Kenes Rakishev.
Hunter’s chummy correspondence with Rakishev, featuring ideas for making money, also appears on the laptop.
Rakishev’s company, Novatus, used a Latvian bank to wire $ 142,300 to Archer’s company, Rosemont Seneca Bohai LLC, on April 22, 2014, according to a currency transaction report recorded in the Republican Senate report. The thread included a note saying the money was “for a car”.
Masimov and Rakishev appear in an unverified photo, posing alongside smiling Joe Biden and Hunter, which was posted on a Kazakh anti-corruption website in 2019.
Hunter Biden took his laptop to a MacBook repair shop in Delaware in April 2019 and apparently forgot about it. He admitted last month, while promoting his drug addiction memoir “Beautiful Things,” that the laptop could “certainly” belong to him, but “I really don’t know.”
The White House did not respond to a request for comment.
Miranda Devine’s book “Laptop From Hell” will be released in September.
