The federal investigation into Hunter Biden’s “tax matters” is proceeding without any interference from President Biden’s White House, according to a report released Wednesday.
Prosecutors in the United States Attorney’s Office in Delaware are “treating him seriously” and they “haven’t heard from the White House” or from Judge Merrick Garland, the president’s candidate to head the Department of Justice, Fox News reported.
Garland told the Senate Judiciary Committee in a confirmation hearing last week that he did not discuss the Hunter Biden inquiry with the president.
âI didn’t,â Garland told senators. “The President made it clear in every public statement before and after my appointment that decisions regarding investigations and prosecutions would be left to the Department of Justice.”
The attorney general candidate told the panel he understood the Hunter Biden investigation “was going on quietly.”
David Weiss, the U.S. lawyer from Delaware overseeing the investigation, was asked to stay on last month even as the Biden administration called for the resignation of other U.S. lawyers appointed by former President Donald Trump.
Hunter Biden confirmed in December that his “tax matters” arising from his overseas business dealings were under investigation by the federal government.
“I learned yesterday for the first time that the United States attorney’s office in Delaware informed my legal counsel, also yesterday, that he was investigating my tax cases,” he said in a statement. .
The investigation also covers a laptop belonging to the president’s son, which was first reported by The Post in a series of briefings, which contains communications and documents surrounding his trade relations in China and Ukraine.
Documents recovered from the laptop also linked President Biden to these agreements.
The investigation, which began in 2018, seeks to determine whether Hunter Biden and his business associates violated tax and money laundering laws.
The son said he took “the matter very seriously”.
A grand jury is part of the investigation, which involves so-called “suspicious activity reports” from banks reporting remittances from China and other countries, Fox News reported as the news broke.
Republican senators in September released a report on young Biden’s business affairs concluding that he “and his family were involved in a vast financial network that linked them to foreign nationals and foreign governments across the world.”
The report also says that the administration of former President Barack Obama ignored the “warning signs” when the son of then-Vice President Joe Biden joined the board of directors of Burisma, a company of natural gas in Ukraine which had been investigated and known to be corrupt.
The company paid Hunter Biden up to $ 50,000 a month because his father was involved in U.S. Ukraine policy, according to the report.
The Post last October revealed the existence of emails found on Hunter Biden’s laptop hard drive detailing his business interests in China and Ukraine.
One of the 2015 emails showed he introduced his father, the vice president, to a top Burisma executive while on the board.
Less than a year later, former Biden pressured Ukrainian officials to fire a top prosecutor who was investigating Burisma.
Other emails showed Hunter had made lucrative business deals with China’s largest private energy company, including one he described as “interesting to me and my family.”
Hunter Biden’s partner in one of the deals with China, Tony Bobulinski, then came forward to confirm that Elder Biden was personally benefiting from the arrangement.
