Matt Gaetz’s ex testifies before grand jury in ‘major development’ of sex trafficking investigation

An ex-girlfriend of Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) testified Wednesday before a federal grand jury investigating the Rep. for sex crimes, NBC News reports, “a major development that suggests the Justice Department may be closing in on the to charge him.”

The ex-girlfriend, who deliberately remained unidentified by NBC News, reportedly argued with prosecutors for months to receive an immunity deal, under which she would avoid ‘obstructing justice charges’ in exchange for testimony in an investigation into whether Gaetz had sex with a 17-year-old girl for money and whether he and others subsequently violated a prostitution law.

Gaetz himself was never charged and has repeatedly denied all charges.

The three crimes Gaetz is being investigated for allegedly include “sex trafficking the 17-year-old; violating the Mann Act, which prohibits smuggling prostitutes across state lines; and obstruction of justice,” writes NBC News, according to legal sources close to the investigation. .

Authorities hope the unnamed ex-girlfriend’s testimony will “fill in crucial aspects” of the investigation, which began more than a year ago, according to NBC News. The ex is believed to be linked to Gaetz during the same period he was accused of having “sexual contact” with a woman who was 17 at the time, CNN notes. Investigators also believe the former girlfriend may prove integral when it comes to the obstruction of justice allegations against lawmakers.

In May, Gaetz’s associate and “former Florida tax agent Joel Greenberg pleaded guilty to multiple felonies and formally agreed to cooperate with the sex crimes investigation,” according to Initiated.
