Ola, Swiggy or Zomato – Which unicorn created the most jobs?

Even though India is toasting its 100 unicorns for giving jobs to millions of people, it is important to recognize the role played by infrastructure development, especially low cost data and payment interface (UPI), to make this possible.

Meanwhile, India’s 100 unicorns have created an average of 3,489 full-time jobs so far. While 34 unicorns created less than 1,000 jobs, ranging from 100 to 854, the other 66 created 2.83 million of the 2.84 million jobs.

Among the 66 unicorns, the top 10 take the lion’s share of 2.58 million jobs, accounting for 90.5% of the total.

Ola, with 1.5 million drivers in its ecosystem and 12,000 employees, represents 53% of the total number of jobs created. Next is Zomato, which has 3.5 lakh delivery partners and 4,259 employees, accounting for 12.4% of total job creation.

Flipkart (7.85%), Swiggy (7.19%) and Delhivery (3.10%) complete the top 5 unicorns in the job creation ranking.

But what really helped move the needle was the 2016 launch of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), a brainchild of the National Democratic Alliance government led by Prime Minister Modi.
