The dust has not yet settled on the controversial All Progressives Congress (APC) Neighborhood Conventions in Osun State.
A group within the party, the Progressive Coalition Against Injustice (PCAI), on Friday called on the Chairman of the Interim Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) and Governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni, to avoid what he called dangerous and self-imploding tendency within the party.
The group said that for more than 10 years, the Osun State Chapter of the APC has built a winning and stable legacy that has provided exceptional development for the people.
In a statement signed by its coordinator, Mr. Jide Alabi, the APC group said it knew the recent parish congress in Osun would not be fair and transparent with the chairman of the congress committee, the Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye, head of the committee, adding that the ambition and the relationship of the latter would not allow him to do what is expected of a referee.
The group alleged that the chairman of the Congress Committee, Elegbeleye, had compromised the process.
Questioning why Governor Adegboyega Oyetola was sympathetic to politicians, especially those from the PDP opposition in the ruling party, the group said the current situation calls for urgent attention from the party’s national leadership.
“The leadership of our great party is invited to take a quick look at developments in order to avoid a dangerous and self-imploding trend.
“Our leaders at the regional and national levels are thus warned to control this trend before it becomes seriously irreversible for the state and the nation,” he said.
The statement further reads: “From the moment he was appointed, we knew there was no way the CPA Ward convention committee in Osun, headed by the Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye could have been fair. This is because we know with good authority that Elegbeleye was appointed by Senator Iyiola Omisore, who tried to hijack the party structure as he did for the PDP and SDP in the past.
“While Elegbeleye has been encouraged by leaders from far and near to at least be fair and to recognize all stakeholders in consensus agreements for ward conventions, he has turned a deaf ear to serving his masters, resorting to a lie, claiming he had selected over 8,000 aspirants in just three hours.
“The question to ask is: why is Governor Oyetola doing everything possible to work with politicians from the PDP like Senator Omisore who had waged wars against progressives like Chief Bisi Akande, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Rauf Aregbesola and the others? The same Omisore, who is no stranger to the death of the late Yoruba chief, Chief Bola Ige.
“Why is Oyetola joining the worst of our political atmosphere to advance a divisive and toxic agenda.”
“Governor Oyetola spares no effort to destroy the legacy by dividing the party and worse, by putting criminal elements of the PDP at the forefront of our party.
“The implications of this for our party’s prospects for the next election are serious. Governor Oyetola deprives the popular base of the party of the right to vote, denies the people access to direct primaries and corrupts our people with criminal elements of the PDP.
