Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa comes from a skin-colored congressional family. His father Santokh Singh Randhawa was a top congressional leader and minister who twice served as the Punjabi congressman. While Operation Blue Star in June 1984, he was one of the handful of Punjabi leaders who supported the then prime minister, Indira Gandhi.
Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, however, is known as a man with his own politics. He was first elected in the Assembly constituency of Fatehgarh Churian in 2002. He won twice in 2012 and 2017 the victory of Dera Baba Nanak, a district of Majha bordering the Indo-Pakistan border.
Randhawa, who was the minister of prisons and cooperation under the Amarinder Singh government, is considered a strong panthic leader of the Congress party despite the baggage of 1984. He spoke openly about the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak committee, Akal Takht affairs and other Sikh issues.
Randhawa was once with Amarinder Singh
Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa stood alongside ousted Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh when Partap Singh Bajwa was chairman of the Punjab Pradesh congressional committee. Bajwa was also from Majha and Randhawa had many reasons for preferring Captain Amarinder Singh to Bajwa. He played an important role not only in ousting Bajwa from the PPCC post, but also in causing the Congress party to sweep Majha out in the 2017 parliamentary elections.
Direct fight with Majithia
Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa is one of the few congressional leaders in Majha to have spoken openly against former cabinet minister and powerful Akali leader Bikram Singh Majithia during the Akali-BJP government.
Captain Amarinder Singh has been accused of ceding to Bikram Singh Majithia after forming the government in 2017. This was one of the allegations against Amarinder Singh, which created differences between him and Randhawa.
Meanwhile, Bikram Singh Majithia continued to target Randhawa for one reason or another. Randhawa played a leading role in prompting 33 congressmen to write a letter to Captain Amarinder Singh to take action against Bikram Singh Majithia. Unlike other MPs, he never compromised with Amarinder over allegations against Majithia.
Important role in the treatment of Bargari Morcha
In 2018, religious organizations installed a morcha at the Bargari shrine, where torn pages of guru Granth Sahib were found on October 12, 2015. The morcha lasted for months and posed a great political challenge to the Amarinder Singh government in 2018. . -until Lok Sabha polls. Jathedar Dhian Singh Mand, appointed by Sarbat Khalsa, led the dharna, demanding action in cases of sacrilege.
Protesters were not ready to end the dharna even after the Punjab government formed SITs to investigate related cases based on Judge Ranjit Singh’s Commission report. Randhawa was one of the ministers, who negotiated with Dhian Singh Mand and made him lift the morcha.
In Sidhu’s camp against the captain
Randhawa has openly expressed his anger at his own government’s alleged inaction on various issues, including cases of sacrilege. While Navjot Singh Sidhu has remained mostly silent after the 2019 parliamentary elections, Randhawa held the fort against Captain Amarinder Singh while risking his own position in the Punjab cabinet.
Interestingly, the Captain and Sidhu prevented Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa from becoming the Chief Minister and forced the Congressional High Command to choose the name of Charanjit Singh Channi on Sunday.
