Rep. Banks says GOP will investigate Biden if party secures house

Rep. Jim Banks promised Sunday that Republicans would investigate the chaotic pullout from Afghanistan and Hunter Biden, first son marked by scandal if they win control of the House — after the GOP suffered a setback in the Senate on Saturday.

“Oversight is a primary function of Congress. And over the past few years, there has been zero oversight of the Biden agenda and the Biden administration,” Banks (R-Ind.) told host Shannon Bream on “Fox News Sunday.”

“So this needs to be a focal point of every congressional committee, especially in the Republican-controlled House.”

As Democrats retained power in the Senate with Democrats Victory for Senator Catherine Cortez Mastos in Nevada, House scrutiny is still pending.

Banks, an Afghanistan veteran, said “nobody was ever held accountable” for the random withdrawal of US troops from the war-torn country last August.

“There has never been an inquiry into the withdrawal from Afghanistan that cost the lives of 13 of our heroes,” said Banks, who is among a number of Republicans vying for the whip of majority in the House if they control the House.

“That means Congress hasn’t done its job in providing that kind of oversight. Oversight of the origins of COVID, of the lockdowns, of the closing of schools as a result of this. We’ve never had oversight from Congress on any of these Biden administration actions,” he said.

But Bream pointed to Republicans’ lackluster performance in last Tuesday’s midterm elections when expectations led them to make huge gains in Congress.

She asked Banks about Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah), in a the wall street journal column, warning House GOP members that they risk turning off voters in 2024 if they spend more time investigating than legislating.

“I mean, the Republicans, a number of them, have made it clear they’re interested in things like investigating Hunter Biden, the FBI, COVID, the pullout from Afghanistan. Where do you see your agenda going? she asked the congressman.

“It’s just a fact of Congress’s responsibility to provide oversight. I believe the American people, not just those on the right, expect Congress to step in and provide that kind of accountability. It is desperately needed, especially, again, if 80% of Americans say America is on the wrong track, they expect Congress to hold the administration accountable for that and their actions,” Banks replied.

“And that’s what we’re going to do. Even in a narrow Republican majority, we will still have the gavels of each of the committees and oversight is a core function,” he said.

Banks also said he backs Republican House leader Kevin McCarthy’s representative becoming president if the GOP ultimately wins control of the chamber.

McCarthy’s leadership has come under heavy criticism in light of Republicans’ disappointing results in the election and some members of the influential House Freedom Caucus were reluctant to step into McCarthy’s corner.

“Lead McCarthy has raised the most money that any leader has ever raised in the history of our party before, $500 million. He’s done his part to put us in a position to win a majority, and we’re going to do it – again a disappointingly narrow majority,” Banks said.

“But if we do what we say we are going to do and if we get serious and push the bold agenda around which our conference is unified, I think we will increase that majority in the 2024 election,” he said. he continued.
