Biden’s Ministry of Truth
At this point in his administration, President Biden and the Democrats in Washington have made it clear that they will not stop with their grand government agenda until they control every aspect of our lives. At every turn, every time they’ve encountered opposition to their policies – whether it’s mask mandates, vaccine mandates, limiting parental involvement in our children’s education or any of their other policies aimed at greater control — the Washington Democrats have called the common-sense opposition “misinformation.” Their strategy isn’t just to disagree – it’s to silence those who speak out. Now they want to control the truth.
From former President Obama to congressional Democrats to the national media, there is a coordinated attempt to intimidate anyone who posts or articulates views contrary to the left’s stated beliefs and agenda. Obama recently gave a speech calling for a crackdown on tech companies to stop the spread of “misinformation.” At the start of this Congress, two powerful Democrats tried to bully cable companies into removing conservative media from their channel lineup, citing “misinformation” emerging on their networks. National intelligence figures shut down a story discussing the problematic contents of Hunter Biden’s laptop – an entirely true story – claiming it was “Russian disinformation”, and TV networks as MSNBC and CNN quickly amplified this view.
Now, the Biden administration has taken those efforts one step further by creating what it has dubbed a “Disinformation Governance Council.” This advice will be based on Biden’s Department of Homeland Security (DHS) — and there’s no doubt that this advice was created with political biases in mind. How do we know? Look who he chose to lead this council. Nina Jankowicz, a leading advocate for the censorship of conservative voices, was chosen to lead this tyrannical council. In the past, Jankowicz has called the real Hunter Biden laptop scandal “misinformation.” Last October, Jankowicz gave a speech in which she said Republicans who oppose the use of critical race theory in classrooms were engaging in “misinformation,” simply by exposing what happened. If this is the new Democratic standard for “misinformation,” anything could be called “disinformation”.
I will not support these efforts to chill our First Amendment rights. I co-authored two bills to put an end to it. The first completely prohibits the creation of the Disinformation Governance Council. The second, the Free Speech Protection Act, also ensures that no federal funds may be used by this administration to carry out any council or entity that seeks to attack free speech by targeting the disinformation. I also joined 175 of my colleagues in the DHS editorial team questioning their legal authority to establish such a council.
It is particularly ironic that the Disinformation Governance Council is created by the agency that routinely lies about policing our southern border. This administration actively suppresses the truth about the damage and the dangers caused by the bad guys who exploit the weakness of our border to traffic people, flood our country with illegal drugs like fentanyl, and even to help people on the terrorist watch list to evade our law enforcement. For President Biden to refuse to hold Homeland Security Secretary Alexander Mayorkas accountable for his stunning failure to protect our homeland is a total disgrace.
In America, the government does not have the right to decide what is true or what is false, and it does not have the right to decide who can speak. Because of its potential to allow the government to regulate speech, some have compared this advice to the “Ministry of Truth” in George Orwell’s book, 1984, a science fiction novel warning of the dangers of totalitarianism. Freedom of speech, guaranteed by the First Amendment to our Constitution, makes America a great nation and we cannot allow the federal government to choose which speech becomes free. Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union, the People’s Republic of China, and even recent dictatorships in Venezuela and North Korea all have one thing in common: they allow government to regulate truth. I will continue to fight against their relentless efforts to take control of our lives.
