Popular Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage could lose some support and see her public image damaged as she battles a scandal that has sparked controversy on social media.
Public relations expert Issac Mayowa told DAILY POST that although the entertainment industry has been engulfed by several controversies involving many other artists, one that is linked to gender threatens the career and public image of an artist.
“The industry is filled with several scandals; from domestic violence to rumors of infidelity or rumors of extramarital affairs, but when an artist’s sex tape goes on the air, it’s a blow, ”he said.
Mr Mayowa added that “most endorse agreements come with moral clauses that give the company the right to terminate the contract if a celebrity gets into trouble, as it could tarnish their reputation.”
Social media was in turmoil on Wednesday following the broadcast of a sex tape involving the singer and her boyfriend.
Tiwa had earlier in an interview with American OAP, Angie Martinez of Power 105.1, sounded the alarm that she was being blackmailed by a stranger with a sex tape
She had expressed concerns about what the blackmailer might do with the clip even as she claimed the video was accidentally posted to Snapchat by her lover, who immediately deleted it.
Although she claimed she would not pay the blackmailer a dime, Tiwa feared the intimate clip would negatively affect her career and public image.
Some Nigerians who doubted the singer felt the alleged sex tape scandal was a publicity stunt for her now released remix of “Somebody’s Son” ft Brandy.
But Tiwa Savage said those who said it was a publicity stunt were simply disappointed that she was able to control the narrative and not allow the “blackmailer” to destroy her.
However, Tiwa’s alleged sex tape was finally released. The blackmailer released the band in the middle of the night on Tuesday and by morning, she had already taken over all the gossip corners.
Fans were stunned when the singer’s intimate moment with her lover was seen. The girl in the sex tape bore a striking resemblance to the crooner ‘Koroba, many argued.
With the social media space thrown in a new noise, Tiwa who didn’t seem bothered showed off the diamond-encrusted wristwatch she bought.
While it is not confirmed whether the woman in the viral video is Tiwa Savage or whether the clip released was the one the 41-year-old was talking about, the singer has remained silent on the matter.
Many have condemned the blackmailer for having broadcast the images while others blame the singer, who is no stranger to the controversies, for being negligent.
Condemning the actions, some Nigerians said the clip was released because she bragged about “controlling the narrative.”
Meanwhile, Mr Mayowa believes the damage from an artist-made sex tape is so enormous that it takes months, sometimes years, to straighten things out.
“Controlling the damage caused by sex tapes is a Herculean task,” he added.
But a charity, a fan of the singer, recalled how popular singer Chidinma Ekile recovered when her alleged sex tape was released and noted that Tiwa Savage would bounce back.
“Because Tiwa Savage’s private activities have been exhibited in public doesn’t make her any different or less human than most of us. She’s amazing, she’s not an angel so mistakes like this should be overlooked. Chidinma survived this same scandal and look at her today the world has changed.
Another respondent identified as Lukas Zayiwulu urged the singer to arrest her lover for his mistake. He also advised her to clean her circles.
“I don’t know how her supposed boyfriend is exempt from this whole sex thing. This video was a close-up and was posted by her boyfriend whose full photos were not being shown. She has an army of bad company and must clean up before consuming it. “
Amid the backlash, some celebrities like Harrysong, Nedu, Mercy Aigbe, IK Ogbonna, Tacha Akide and Angel Smith of BBNaija backed the singer. They congratulated her and encouraged her.
