On Monday, MSNBC’s Ari Melber appeared distressed by news that Elon Musk had bought Twitter for $44 billion, saying the platform could be manipulated to win an election. His concerns about the hypotheticals were similar to the warnings issued by conservatives since the platform removed and censored information during the 2020 election cycle that could have altered the results.
Melber speculated about Musk, “If you own all of Twitter or Facebook or whatever, you don’t have to explain yourself. You don’t even have to be transparent. You could secretly ban a party’s candidate or all of its nominees, all of its nominees, or you could just covertly deny the reach of their stuff and boost the reach of something else.”
Twitter’s new owner is a free speech absolutist who was pressured into buying the platform, in part, to uphold the value of free speech and end the kind of behavior that Melber says gone happen.
“And the rest of us might not even find out until after the election. Elon Musk says it’s all to help people because he’s just a free-spoken, philosophically clear, open-minded assistant. ‘spirit,” Melber said.
