What did the Palestinians achieve after the ceasefire with Israel?

RAMALLAH from Palestine

Following an Egypt-brokered ceasefire between Gaza and Israel, which went into effect Friday at 2 a.m. (Thursday 11 p.m. GMT) after 11 days of Israeli airstrikes on the Strip. Gaza under blockade, jubilant celebrations were reported in the Palestinian territories as a victory against the occupying forces.

Besides the success of Palestinian factions in establishing themselves on the political map and asserting themselves on the ground, two Palestinian political experts told Anadolu Agency that the most important achievement of the last battle was the unification of the Palestinians. worldwide.

The two experts believe that with the implementation of the mutual ceasefire, the demands of the resistance factions have shifted from ensuring basic humanitarian needs to achieving strategic objectives. They also argued that the resistance, by launching the last round of war, created a balance of terror by denying the occupation, the monopoly to start war, a privilege that Israel has long enjoyed.

Another achievement, experts pointed out, is the success of resistance factions in exposing Israel’s fragility and crippling normal daily life in the country.

Reclaiming Palestinian Unity

Political analyst and expert on Israeli affairs, Adel Shadeed, told Anadolu Agency that the most important achievement after the end of the latest round of fighting is the restoration of Palestine as a “national problem” that does not exist. should not be compromised by “narrow factional considerations”.

The war claimed that “the conflict is between the Palestinian people and their national movement on the one hand, and Israel on the other hand, after decades of attempts (by Israel) to divide the Palestinian people,” Shadeed added.

He sees the sense of euphoria over the Palestinians’ victory as a “strategic achievement” that will have an impact on regaining their dignity and boosting their confidence in their ability to deter Israel and force its people into hiding in protected areas .

Another strategic achievement, he noted, is the resurrection of Palestinians in the West Bank, Gaza, the Diaspora and historic Palestine “from under the rubble” following vicious attempts to divide them along tribal lines. , while reaffirming their definition of Israel. as “an enemy and not a neighbor”.

As for Israel, Shadeed said, it has proven its status as a “rogue state that understands only the language of force” demonstrated through its relations with Palestinians and Arabs for 73 years.

With the blow he suffered in the last cycle of the war, Shadeed said: “Israel will have to think a thousand times before deciding to attack Gaza or assassinate influential leaders,” adding that the occupation has had a before. -taste of “the logic of force”. it has always been used extensively in the region.

De-standardization of the standardization project

Hamas has long been “trapped” by its concern to ensure that the basic needs of the people of Gaza it rule are met, Shadeed said, noting that this entrapment came at the expense of his liberation plan.

He pointed out that the last round of conflict with Israel had helped Hamas realize the trap and open a “pivotal stage in the history of the Israeli-Palestinian relationship” by changing the Israeli approach to the Palestinians and sending a message to countries in the process of standardization that “standardization will not succeed. “

Four Arab countries, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Sudan and Morocco, signed agreements brokered by the United States last year to normalize relations with Israel, a move the Palestinians saw as a betrayal of their own. cause.

“Israel is unable to protect itself, its airspace, its citizens, its ports and airports from a Palestinian faction, so how is it going to protect you from Iran?” Shadeed summed up the message the war will send to Arab countries in the process of normalization.

As for Israel’s main ally, the United States, Shadeed said, will question the importance of the occupation in its ability to protect its interests in the region “when it cannot protect itself” against Hamas.

No monopoly to start war

For his part, journalist and political analyst Nawaf Al-Amer endorsed Shadeed’s argument that the unification of the Palestinian people in the world was the most important achievement of the last round of conflict between Gaza and Israel.

The war has proven that, if united, the Palestinians “can achieve unexpected goals,” Al-Amer said, adding that the Palestinians are now convinced that “resistance is the only option capable of success” while those who call for peace and their supporters have rather proved it. their failure.

Al-Amer believes that with the decision of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to cancel the May 22 parliamentary elections, the people voted for the resistance and the people of the Gaza Strip.

At the end of April this year, Abbas unilaterally postponed the first Palestinian national election in 15 years due to Israel’s blocking of elections in East Jerusalem.

Al-Amer argued that the 2014 war will be the last Israel starts after taking the final blow.

The Palestinian resistance has raised the hopes and ambitions of the people in the liberation project, according to Al-Amer, which is underlined by the reconquest of Jerusalem and the expulsion of the occupying forces.

Recent tensions that started in East Jerusalem during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan have spilled over into Gaza following Israeli assaults on worshipers in the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound and Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood.

Following the ceasefire, the death toll for Israeli attacks on the besieged Gaza Strip stood at 243, including 66 children and 39 women, the Palestinian health ministry said on Friday.

At least 1,910 people were injured, the ministry said in a statement.

Twelve Israelis were also killed in Palestinian rocket attacks from the Gaza Strip.

The Israeli military has staged airstrikes across the Gaza Strip since May 10, leaving behind a massive trail of destruction across the seaside territory.
